Stephanie Elswick with the Shelby County Animal Shelter group presented a proposal to the Center City Council at Monday's March 27 regular meeting on a proposed “Spay and Neuter Low Income Program.” Talking points offered by Elswick in addition to the presentation included:

The spay/neuter program is officially named “Spay it Forward”.

• The program does NOT include a trap and release program due to our designated vet’s schedule. Our certificates give a 60-day window.  So, unless someone wants to catch a stray and keep them for 30-60 days , it’s almost impossible to offer a trap and release program.

• Several of the board of directors volunteer at other shelters in order to gain experience and knowledge regarding animal shelters as a whole.

• Mike (Elswick) and I try to visit shelters as well as their events whenever possible. We have had the pleasure of visiting shelters  in Longview, Kaufman Co., and Marshall.

• The first major event, a "Bark-a-Rama" wag and walk is tentatively set for May 13 on the square. Once the date is confirmed, details will be publicized.
