Lady Dragons win New Summerfield b-ball tourney defeating Martinville
The Timpson Bears continue to roll through Texas 2A-DI after defeating the Wolfe City Wolves 58-20 in the area round. The Wolves left this matchup with a final overall record of 9-3, while the Bears have maintained a perfect, undefeated season through all 12 games so far this season.
Wolfe City received the opening kickoff. Timpson stood tall on defense and forced the Wolves to punt. Timpson then proceeded to march the ball downfield before quarterback Terry Bussey connected on a 13-yard pass to Amari Bruton for the first touchdown of the game.
On the ensuing kickoff, the Bears recovered the onside kick to maintain possession of the football. At the end of the drive, Bussey pushed the ball in from the one-yard line for the score giving the Bears a 13-0 lead.
With about 4:32 left on the clock in the first quarter, Bussey and Bruton connected again for the score, this time from 49 yards out.
Wolfe City was finally able to punch the ball into the endzone to cut the lead to 20-7, but with only 44 seconds left in the first, Nate Scourton broke loose on a 44-yard touchdown run.
Heading into the second quarter, Timpson had already established a commanding 27-7 lead over the Wolves, and the Bears held Wolfe City to a scoreless second quarter. Bussey rushed for his first touchdown of the night on a 23-yard sprint. Braylon Parker was able to pick off an errant pass thrown by Wolfe City. Bussey also completed a 43-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Colton Carroll. Timpson led 41-7 at the half.
After halftime, Wolfe City was able to recover the kickoff for a chance to trim the lead. They capitalized on it and trimmed the lead to 41-14. Before the end of the third, kicker Tyler Lane drilled a 34-yard field goal to give Timpson a 44-14 advantage heading into the final quarter.
Bussey broke loose for a pair of 53-yard rushing touchdowns. Wolfe City crossed the goal line once more bringing the final to 58-20, Timpson.
The Bears are on a mission this season. With a number of key players set to graduate, Timpson has their eyes on the prize. While a state championship is not the determining factor on whether or not a team had a successful season, it most certainly is the goal.
For now, the Bears are taking things one game at a time. Their next opponent is Honey Grove who sports a 10-1-1 record. These two teams will meet in Athens this Friday at 1:00 p.m. to see who advances from the regional round of 2A-DI playoffs.
