Dorthy Lou (Roberts) Carter, age 94, passed away peacefully on July 8, 2025. She was born on February 4, 1931 to the late Aldridge Roberts and Ilene (King) Roberts. She grew up along the Texas coast in Ingleside and later in Pasadena. While attending the University of Houston, she met her husband, S.W. Carter. They married on October 11, 1952, and eventually made their home in Shelbyville, Texas, where they became longtime members of the community and the First Baptist Church of Shelbyville. In her later years, Dorthy resided at Pine Grove Nursing Center in Center, Texas.
A devoted homemaker, Dorthy took pride in creating a well-kept home and found joy in simple routines, including her afternoon coffee and weekly trips to the hair salon. She enjoyed still life painting in her earlier years and was an active member of the Art Club for several years. Her life was deeply rooted in faith, shaping her values and beliefs. Dorthy held her family close to her heart, and her love for them was constant throughout her life.
Dorthy is survived by: daughters, Dr. Alisa Carter and husband, Dr. Michael Hibbs, of Cleburne, Texas and Serica Carter Wilkins and husband, Ronnie of Center, Texas; grandchildren, Dan’l Lewis and wife, Emily, Chris Wilkins and wife, Holly, Michael Lewis, Julie Zeller and husband, Jordan; great-grandchildren, Silas Lewis, Maddox Lewis, Eloise Lewis, Carter Wilkins, Lincoln Wilkins and Adam Zeller; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, S. W. Carter; her parents, Aldridge and Ilene (King) Roberts; and her brother and sister-in-law, William and Ruth Roberts.
The family would like to thank all of the wonderful people who were a part of Dorthy’s life at Pine Grove Nursing Center for their kind and compassionate care. They would also like to thank the people at Choice Hospice in Tyler for their dedication and caring attention to Dorthy.
A service celebrating Dorthy’s life is planned for a later date.
