James Permenter

Funeral services for Mr. James Permenter, 85 of Panola will be held on Thursday, March 21, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at the Hawthorn Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Randy Miller officiating. Burial will follow in the Panola Mt. Zion Cemetery under the direction of Hawthorn Funeral Home. A time of visitation will be held on Wednesday evening from 6:00-8:00 at the funeral home.

Mr. James Henry Permenter was born on February 20, 1939, in Joaquin to his parents, Henry Chester Permenter and Marietta Haight Permenter. He passed from this life on Monday, March 18, 2024, in Carthage surrounded by his loving family.

After high school, he served his country ever so proudly with the United States Marine Corp. He was a member of the New Hebron Baptist Church in Panola, Texas. Mr. James loved to hunt, fish, and spend time in his garden. He worked at Fab Steel Company in Waskom for many years before his retirement. After retirement, he went and worked as a custodian for Elysian Fields Elementary School where he was famously known by the teachers and students as Mr. P.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife, Dorothy Jo Permenter; son, Dennis Ray Permenter; sisters, Lillie Carrington and Margie Chappell.

He is survived by his loving children, Pam Works and husband Dewey “Squeaky” of Carthage, Carl Permenter and wife Melody of Midlothian; sister, Jerry Parsons; grandchildren, Waylon Yount and Shanna Heard, ReBecca Woo and husband Yoong, and one great grandchild, Mirabelle Woo.

Extended family, Alisha Norris and family, Joyce Morris, Johanna Hodges, Jackie Rogers, Mandy McCall, and Angie O’Brien.

Serving as pallbearers will be Winston Horton, Ty Lawless, Jesse Norris, Alan Gonzalez, Barre Gonzalez, and Paul Gonzalez.

Honorary pallbearers will be Tim Rogers, Charles Morrow, and Tommy Wallace.
