2023 season living up to preseason forecast for quality bucks in the field
Several hunters were after this remarkable Gregg County 12 pointer, but Blake Williams ultimately cracked the code on October 5 with a crossbow. The free-ranging buck gross scores 181 B&C inches and is sure to be among the non-typicals taken in the Pineywoods this season.Another local hunter,Michael Britt, spent 69 days in an archery blind last season trying to take the buck, but never laid eyes on the animal a single time. Lady archer Hailey Holder with the 7 1/2-year old buck she arrowed in Collingsworth County in the Texas Panhandle on October 14. Holder reported on the Texas Buck Registry that hunters had purposely avoided shooting the deer for the last four seasons to allow it to mature. (Photo courtesy Texas Buck Registry)
Brazos County archer Tanner Slaten recently learned that the 50-acre tract of property where he has been hunting the last 15 years will be placed up for sale at the end of the hunting season. Slaten bagged his 150 inch 10 pointer off the property on September 30. He reported to TBR:“What an amazing way to end the 15 years of hunting that place. The Lord really saved the best for last.” (Photo courtesy of Texas Buck Registry)
The Great Outdoors
Most wildlife experts agreed early on that Texas deer hunters were going to be pleasantly surprised by the antler quality on whitetail bucks this fall. The reasons? Good carryover of animals that survived the 2022-23 season and banner habitat conditions last spring and early summer to jump start another year of antler growth.
