Cobwebs in the Attic
We recently took a small road trip, or “adventure,” as they mostly become. While watching the scenery fly by, a few songs came to mind, and I belted out, “on the road again.”
Not sure my loud, slightly obnoxious, off-key, rambunctious serenade was appreciated by my traveling partners, but I enjoyed it.
Then other tunes ran through my brain and … hence the following column for all you weary travelers. You may spot some of your favorites woven in-between. I apologize in advance for the challenge of finding close to 50 odd songs.
I woke up Saturday morning and thought to myself, what a wonderful world we live in. This would be a great day for road trippin. So, I told my most affectionate and accommodating spouse, let’s hit the road, Jack, because it’s a beautiful day to jump in my car and take a trip down the yellow brick road before we are running on empty. When he agreed, I was so happy I felt I could be sitting on top of the world while we were free falling like a rolling stone.
Like an American woman, I know every day is a winding road, so, I was looking forward to the freedom of our tires rolling in the deep in our fast car traveling a thousand miles. We drove across the great southern lands on those country roads alongside of those old cotton fields back home.
These days with the price of gasoline, it’s hard to keep the car running. It was easier in the old days to go through rivers deep and mountains high on the back of the horses as midnight riders, through the small towns, or even walking those five hundred miles. Today, if you say, “road trip,” you’ve got a friend with this California girl who will get so excited, because she was definitely born to be wild and get around on the road again. And so, we took our trip north, with our tickets to ride through small towns where the streets have no names. I was riding shotgun, and had a ticket to paradise city, riding along in my automobile, lost in my own thoughts and California dreaming, cuz girls just want to have fun, right? How good is that?
I told my husband that a drive in those country roads past all the little churches in the wildwood that the drive was so relaxing, especially when the going gets rough around our daily grind. It reminds me of all the small things and brings redemption to my heart when it needs a change of scenery.
Our road trip was fun. We made it to Jefferson and back again, strolled through the wonderful and fascinating antique shops and emporiums, had a great lunch, and returned home feeling rested and happy to have enjoyed the day.
The songs continued to run through my brain like soft kitten’s feet, and as I write, I have thought of many, many, more … but that’s for another column.
Enjoy your day, but if you are feeling a little closed in, you may think about leaving on a jet plane just for a little while or give yourself an opportunity to take a ride in that little blue coupe just for a quick runaway to sweet home Alabama, or a longer trip to the Hotel California.
You will feel the better for it!
