Veterans Day observances

Veterans Day, Nov. 11, is a time for all Americans to pay their respects to those who have served our country. One day to stand united in respect for all veterans, past and present. We celebrate and honor America’s Veterans for their patriotism, love of country, willingness to serve, and sacrifice for the common good.

Traditionally Shelby County Memorial Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8904 does not hold a program on this day. Instead, we join with the local schools that are hosting an event to honor this day. Programs known are: Local Schools Veterans Day Programs are:

• Thursday, November 9 at Center High School gym. At 10 a.m. Veterans should report to the cafetorium by 9:45 am. At 10:00 a.m. they will enter the gym as a group and sit in special seating.

• Thursday, November 9 Timpson at 10 a.m. at the Timpson ISD event center. Complimentary lunch for Veterans will follow in high school library.

• Friday, November 10 at Joaquin at 9 a.m. atthe Joaquin HS Gym. Special seating for Veterans. A breakfast reception for Veterans and Families follows in the HS Library. Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen awards will be presented by VFW Post 8904.

• Friday, November 10 at Shelbyville at 9 a.m. Third grade students will host the program in the Shelbyville ISD cafetorium. Try to arrive by 8:45 am.

• Friday, Nov. 10 Tenaha ISD will host a come and go breakfast event from 8:15 until 8:40 a.m. in the Tenaha ISD cafetorium to honor local Veterans for their service. All local Veterans are invited to attend.

• Monday, November 13 at Center Elementary at 9 a.m. in the Center Elementary gym. Report to the office as you come in the front door, and you will be escorted to the gym for special seating.

We encourage every citizen of Shelby County, especially military veterans to join us in attending one or more of these programs.

The students put in a lot of time and effort to make our local veterans feel special and if you’ve never attended, you will be glad you did.
