Shelby County resident, Olivia Johnson, won the title of National Watermelon Queen Feb. 25-26 in Asheville, North Carolina at the 108th Annual National Watermelon Convention.
Growing up in a farm family of many generations, Johnson has spent her life in the watermelon industry with her parents, Shelby and Renee Johnson.
Alongside taking the National Watermelon Queen title, Johnson has won Shelby County’s biggest watermelon competition eight times, serving as the East Texas Watermelon Queen and the 2022 Texas Watermelon Queen.
Johnson is also a senior nutrition major at Texas A&M University. After graduation, she hopes to work in the watermelon industry. She says she is beyond excited to bring her dedication to the national level and hopes to make the National Watermelon Association proud as she takes on the role of 2023 National Watermelon Queen.
The National Watermelon Queen serves as the public relations ambassador for the National Watermelon Association. During her year, she will travel across the nation to promote the overall consumption of watermelons. During her travels she will attend more than 100 events.
