The annual National Day of Prayer event was Thursday, May 4 at noon on the lawn of Center’s Historic 1885 Courthouse.

Sponsored locally by the Ministerial Alliance of Shelby County, the National Day of Prayer was passed by Congress in the early 1950s and is observed by towns and cities around America on the first Thursday of May.

Local members of the community joined pastors, leaders, and first responders from Shelby County as they prayed for the city, community, schools and neighbors. Prayers were given by David Mathis, Sheriff Kevin Windham, Malcom Monroe, Josh Crawford, Center Mayor Pro Tem Leigh Porterfield and other community pastors and leaders.

City of Center’s Fire Department raised the American Flag over the courthouse lawn with the department’s ladder truck as those attending participated in a time of prayer.
