Two photos taken 100 years apart at the same location on the downtown Center square are the focal point of the newest exhibit at the Shelby County Museum. The display of photos and accompanying artifacts opened Thursday, July 20.

On May 5, 1923, Center photographer Roy R. Loving took the first photo of the northwest corner of the square. A century later to the day on Friday, May 5, 2023, Center photographer Lawrence Davis took a photograph on the same corner commemorating the 100th anniversary of the well-known 1923 photo.

On display with the 100th anniversary photos are exhibits of Shelby County history including documents, one an 1849 list of Shelby County surveys compiled for county maps, and a history of post offices and communities.

Also on display is a photo of Daniel McSwain III who was a part of building the Historic Courthouse.

The museum is taking pre-orders for copies of the 1923 and 2023 photos for $50 each.

All proceeds will benefit the museum.

Visit this exhibit and inquire about pre-orders at the Shelby County Museum located at 230 Pecan Street in Center.
