Center Elementary School’s fourth grade teacher, Melissa Muñoz, was awarded and honored as Post Teacher of the Year by the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 8904 Friday, Dec. 8.

According to the local VFW Post, Munoz was nominated as the VFW Teacher of the Year for “her community outreach and all she does for students in the community.”

Members of VFW Post 8904 surprised Muñoz with the award and gift baskets during her class and brought cupcakes for everyone to enjoy. Presenting the awards were Post Commander Richard Lundie and his wife and Auxiliary Member Linda Lundie, Post Quartermaster Larry Hume, and post members Derrick and Mary Roberts.

One of Muñoz’s students, Brynlee Hayes, volunteered to read the award to the class, “National Citizenship Education Teacher of the Year Award, Post Level, Center Elementary School, presented to Melissa Muñoz. Given this 8th day of December 2023.”

When Quartermaster Hume jokingly asked the students, “Is she a good teacher, by the way?”

The students replied with a roaring, “Yes!”

Muñoz and her students enjoyed the cupcakes and new gifts for the classroom together with members of the VFW after being presented the award.
