Event dedicated to honor memory of Portia Gaines
The Fannie Brown Booth Memorial Library inaugural Shelby County Author’s Day is set for Saturday, Feb. 18 at the John D.
Windham Civic Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Plans are to make it an annual event.
The highly anticipated Author’s Day will be well attended by the many talented local authors in and around Shelby County.
Their published works range from thriller/espionage fiction, Christian romance, inspirational, children’s picture books, historical non-fiction, and journalism.
Authors attending will be Larry Enmon, Lamar Denby, Joann Spano Bush, Charlotte Corbell Ingle, Dan Fleming, Carmen Whitaker, Vanessa Davis, Tiffany Bryant, Neal Murphy, Betty Oglesbee, Regina Bryant, David Swanzy, Terri Lecher, The Light and Champion and Shelby County Today.
At noon, Center Mayor David Chadwick and County Judge Allison Harbison will officially proclaim the first Shelby County Author’s Day dedicated to honor, and in memory of, long-time Shelby County resident, Mrs.
Portia Gaines.
Mrs. Gaines taught English in the Center School district.
After retirement, she continued teaching classes at Panola College. Throughout over her 50 years of teaching, Mrs. Gaines taught multi-generations of Shelby County students making each feel unique and special. She was an avid reader, an outstanding member of the community, and a generous supporter of the Fannie Brown Booth Memorial Library.
Authors will have published works available for sale or information on purchasing books in bookstores and online.
Attending authors will sign previously purchased books as well. Plus, drawings will be conducted throughout the morning for copies of books donated by the attending authors.
The Fannie Brown Booth Memorial Library is located at 619 Tenaha Street in Center.
