The first Shelby County AG Mechanics Foundation Build Off saw nine participating ISDs compete with three of them capturing wins. The new event was held Friday, March 3, at the Shelby County Expo Center with plans call for making the Build Off an annual event.

Participating ISD’s included Center, Joaquin, Timpson, Shelbyville, Bremond, North Hopkins, Newton, San Augustine and Central.

Each team of four FFA students competed by building a custom gate with 14-gauge square tubing between 12 and 16 feet. The Shelby County AG Mechanics Foundation provided the materials for the gates while the schools provided the tools needed. Each team started their day at 7:00 a.m. and worked together to complete their project by 2 p.m. for judges to examine.

“These young men and women came out and gave it their all today,” said Shelby County Ag Mechanics Foundation representative, Taylor Buster. “This competition not only tested their skills, it also taught them team work, communication and to work through problems as they arise and to not give up no matter what occurs.”

Timpson ISD won first place in the Build off. Newton ISD placed second, and Bremond ISD placed third.

First place was sponsored by JB Raymond, Panola College and The Shelby County AG Mechanics Foundation. Each student received a prize of $700, a custom Grand Champion belt buckle and a $750 scholarship from Panola College.

Second place was sponsored by Jacob Hutchins and The Shelby County AG Mechanics Foundation. Each student received a prize of $375 and a custom Reserve Champion belt buckle.

Third place was sponsored by Sand Hill Wrecker (Larry Joe Eaves) and Shelby County AG Mechanics Foundation. Each student received a prize $175 and a custom third place belt buckle.

“We would like to thank the Shelby County community, and our sponsors for your continued support of our students as we are building in their future,” said Buster.
