Second-half adjustment leads Bears to victory

Over the past three years, Timpson has been a tough team to catch. Their tendency to score early and often has been a blight upon opposing teams. Last Friday, things started as usual, with the Bears piling up an early lead over their opponent. Heading into the second quarter Timpson led 15-0 over the Jefferson Bulldogs.

Quarter two was a different story. It has not been odd for opponents to find themselves chasing the Bears. What is rare is for one of those opponents to actually catch up, and that is exactly what Jefferson did. The Bulldogs’ grit was on full display in the second quarter, knotting things up at 22 all before halftime.

Coach Therwhanger used the halftime break to adjust, and Timpson regained their lead by owning the third quarter scoring 19 and allowing zero. The third quarter was key in earning the 48-29 win over a scrappy opponent.

JJ Garner completed four passes on nine attempts for 110 yards and a touchdown. Sophomore receiver Chris Nickleberry was Garners’ target on the 26-yard touchdown pass. Senior Amari Bruton hauled in two passes for 67 yards, and fellow senior Shaheed Cross pulled in an 18yard reception.

Garner carried the ball 21 times for 160 yards and a touchdown. Vosky Howard carried the ball 10 times and tallied a massive 181-yard total with three touchdowns. Bruton made his one carry count as he racked up 50 yards and a touchdown. Nickleberry also factored into the run game with 11 carries.

This week, Timpson will host the Daingerfield Tigers. Daingerfield currently holds a perfect 2-0 record, and by all appearances, is a tough football team. Timpson will undoubtedly welcome the challenge.
