Timpson Bears trip Garrison, 35-14, in Regional Playoff win

Bears advance to Quarterfinals against Beckville on Friday in Henderson

The number 13 turned out being a lucky one for the Timpson Bears last week as they extended their season undefeated streak to 13 games by claiming the Region III Regional Championship while knocking off the Garrison Bulldogs, 35-14.

Up next for Timpson is Class A UIL State Quarterfinal action against the Beckville Bearcats. The meeting is set for Henderson Lions Stadium with a 7:30 p.m., Friday, Dec. 4, kickoff against the 10-3 Bearcats.

“It's going to get tougher and tougher,” Bears head coach Kerry Therwhanger told the team after last week's victory. He said the 2020 football squad has already made Bears history.

“No other Bears team has ever won 13,” he said. But Therwhanger said the team is on the brink of making even more Timpson history.

“We're going to enjoy this one, but when we come back on Monday we've got to be ready to go to work,” he said Friday. “You all made that happen. Be loud and proud — we're going to the state quarterfinals.”

Beckville (10-3) defeated Normangee High School by a 22-19 score.

Last Friday's game represented the 64th time the Bears and Bulldogs have played with Garrison having a distinct 42-22 advantage in victories over the historic series. But the Bulldogs' have never encountered a Bears team like the one they have now played twice this year, losing on both occasions.

Therwhanger said seeing the 2020 edition of the Timpson Bears accomplish what they have so far is what he lives for as a coach.

“This is the reason I go to work every day, this is the reason I do what I do, so you guys can have this opportunity,” he said.

Timpson held a clear advantage in the regional contest played at Stephen F. Austin State University's Homer Bryce Stadium on Friday, Nov. 25. The Bears scored early and took a 21-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.

While the Bulldogs came alive for a short time in the second half, that spark was short-lived and seem to have been permanently doused when Bears Trey Davis intercepted a Garrison pass early in the fourth quarter. That turn of events took place after the Bulldogs posted 14 unanswered points to narrow the Timpson lead to 28-14.

Timpson's Terry Bussey would seal the deal a few plays later for the Bears with 7:47 left in the game when he literally slid across the goal line pylon to put the Bears on top, 35-14.

The Bears put their mark on the game early in the first quarter when Braden Courtney ran the ball around the right side from about 9 yards out with 9:13 left in the first quarter.

About three minutes later, with the Bulldogs appearing to get set up for a potential score, Terry Bussey picked off a Bulldogs pass and dashed 72 years downfield to put the Bears ahead at about half way through the opening period.

The Timpson defense was able to contain the Garrison offense through the remaining minutes of the first quarter and all the way through the second period.

It was with just 9 seconds left in the first half when the Bears would extend their lead to 21-0 going into halftime. With the clock running down, the Bears called upon the running ability of Courtney again from about 22 yards out as he weaved and avoided several Bulldogs on his way to the end zone. The PAT by Logan Depaepe was again good.

With 7:35 remaining on the third period clock the Bears worked themselves into scoring position again after a pass from LT Washington connected with Malachi Blanton from mid-field with Blanton running the ball to about the 10-yard line. Courtney would take the ball in for the TD to give Timpson a 28-0 lead.

Less than two minutes later the Bulldogs hit the end zone for the first time in the game on a 3-yard run at about the halfway mark of the third quarter, narrowing the Bears advantage to 28-7. That provided the Bulldogs enough momentum to rally yet another score in the early seconds of the fourth quarter.

A Garrison runner took the ball in from about the 2-yard line at the 10:29 mark early in the fourth quarter to cut the Timpson lead to 28-14. After the Bears failed to convert on their next possession the Bulldogs took over once again and appeared to be hyped for getting on the scoreboard once again.

Those hopes were dashed when Bears' Trey Davis made his timely interception followed by Bussey's final touchdown of the night to end the game with the 35-14 Timpson advantage.

The Bears rolled up 422 total yards offense in the game with 340 of those coming in the Timpson running game with another 82 yards in their aerial attack. The Bears defense held the Bulldogs to 221 total yards on the night

Courtney was named Player of the Game for the Bears with three TD's, 149 yards rushing on 20 carries for an average of 7.5 yards per carry.

Leading the Timpson defensive effort were Bussey with two tackles, an interception and a defensive touchdown; Codie Crawford with four tackles including being in on a tackle for a loss of yards; and, Ferron Crockett credited with two tackles and for being on a tackle for a loss of yards.

In the 13 victories which have propelled the Bears into the State Quarterfinals the Timpson offense has rolled 690 points while the stout Bear defense has held opponents to 135 points.
