Timpson Bears historic season ends with a 14-1 record and a four-deep run in playoff action

The Shiner Comanches defeated the Bears, 49-7, in the Texas State UIL Class 2A Semifinal Championship game Thursday, Dec. 10, in New Caney.

But Bears head coach and Timpson ISD Athletic Director Kerry Therwhanger said he is extremely proud of the historic accomplishments of the team.

We ran into a better football team tonight. Tip your hat to them, but just really proud of what the kids accomplished tonight.”

The Bears completed the 2020 season with a 14-1 record — better than any Timpson football team in the school's history.

“No team from Timpson’s ever been this far, and the moment didn’t ever get too big for them,” Therwhanger said. Of the team's only loss, coming at the hands of No. 1 ranked Shiner Comanches, he said they were impressive.

“We couldn’t get them stopped or beat them physically,”
Therwhanger said. “Like I said, our hat’s off them for their run, but we’re really proud of our kids for the way they came out and battled, especially that second half.”

The Bears never gave up.

“They could have given up at halftime and let them score 70, but our kids battled and gave everything they had,” he said. “We’re really, really proud of them.”
