Timpson sees close game devolve into a big win for Carlisle
PRICE -- There were two big "what if" moments in the Timpson Bears 30-6 loss at Carlisle Friday night:
• Kaseon Gentry's 41-yard reception on the Bears opening possession that ended with an Indian defender knocking the ball loose from behind for a turnover that gave the Indians the ball at their own 25 -- setting up their 75-yard scoring drive to take a 7-0 lead.
• On the ensuing kickoff, Gentry returned the ball 75 yards for an apparent touchdown. But it was negated by a holding penalty.
From there, Timpson's offense struggled as it failed to produce a non-penalty first down in the first-half. Its next fives drives in the half ended with another lost fumble, two punts and an interception.
"Football is a big momentum game, and when one team has it, it is hard for the other to fight back from it," said Timpson coach Kerry Therwhanger. "If both of those plays stand up, I see us with a little more energy. That being said, they whipped out tails."
Yet, thanks to a Gannen Braddock 94-yard kick-off return for a touchdown, Timpson only trailed 16-6 a the half.
Timpson came out with the opening drive of the second half, and moved the ball down to a first-and-10 on the Carlisle 22. But a penalty and two negative-gain runs left the Bears with a fourth-and-20 on the 33. The drive ended on downs with a incomplete pass. It would mark TImpson's deepest penetration of the game.
Therwhanger thought the battle in the trenches was pivotal.
"Up front on the offensive and defensive line, I thought that was the difference," he said. "Their defensive line was getting thorugh and we were having trouble handling them. And our defensive line was not able to get penetration and pressure."
Shakeen Washington, who injured his ankle agasint West Sabine, did not play.
