Tenaha routs Gateway Charter, 53-0
After an easy win against Kerns 28-9 last week, the Tenaha Tigers took on the Gateway Charter Academy Gators at home Friday to win 53-0. This win brings the Tenaha Tigers to a current season record of 3-0.
The game began with the Tenaha defense holding ground against the Gators, causing a fourth down and punt after just a 1:30 off the clock. Tenaha then took possession at the 10:00 mark and made great use of quarterback C.J. Horn’s passing skills to bring the Tigers into Gator territory. It was Horn’s running game, though, that brought the first touchdown of the night for the Tigers at 6:45 with a 36-yard run for a score of 7-0.
The Tenaha defense held strong against the Gators, pushing the team back during their next possession. After a few failed attempts to get through the Tigers wall of defense, the Gators attempted to punt but were unable to make the snap. On the next Tenaha possession, wide receiver Trai Gardner made easy work of the Gateway team, bringing in a 25-yard touchdown pass for a 13-0 lead, with the PAT from Christian Castillo no good, a first for the Tiger kicker.
The Gators finally made a first down in the quarter at 3:36, pushing through Tiger defense to make a five-yard run, but that would be the only break the Gators would make in the Tiger defense in the first quarter. The quarter ended with a call on Tenaha for ball holding as the clock ran out, the score 13-0 Tigers lead.
The second quarter began with a second penalty against the Tigers forcing the team into a second down 10-yard pass. The quarter was marked by several penalties on the Tigers including blocking, holding, and more forcing the Tenaha team back down the field as the clock ran down. The Tigers were able to keep first down as they worked their way down the field, and after a penalty called on the Gators, bringing the Tigers to the 10-yard line, Lloyd was then able to run the ball in for the first touchdown of the quarter at 7:42, 20-0 Tigers lead.
The Tenaha team took back possession soon after kicking the ball back to the Gators with a recovery by Onterio Thompson. Thompson followed this with a 45-yard run into the endzone at 7:15 to bring the Tiger lead to 27-0. Tight-end Hayden Jenkins for the Tigers took the team to 34-0 at 4:00 with a 21-yard run into the endzone after a 10-yard pass from Horn.
Gateway Gators attempted to run the ball during the remainder of the quarter, but were unable to gain substantial yardage for a first down. With only two minutes left on the clock, a 56-yard pass/run from Horn to Gardner brought the ball to the one-yard line, and on the next play the Tigers brought the lead to 40-0 with another missed PAT by Castillo to end the first half.
The second half of the game started with a kickoff to the Tigers resulting in a series of penalties stopping Onterio Thompson from making the first touchdown of the third quarter with a 55-yard run. Tenaha did not let the penalty stop them though, at 9:45 Cody Foshee took off and slipped through Gator defense for a 40-yard run down the field for a touchdown 47-0 in the third.
The Gateway offense was able to make a first down at 7:40, but was pushed back down the field for a loss of eight yards. The Gator offense was unable to make it past Tiger defense during their possession, resulting yet again a punt back to the Tigers. The Tenaha offense took advantage of the lead over the Gators to work on their running game as the third quarter ran down. Castillo made yet another field goal attempt that was no good at 2:23, allowing the Gateway team to take back possession.
Gator possession was short lived though, the Gateway team was unable to break through the Tenaha defensive line and was forced to punt back to the Tigers in the last minute of the quarter. With only :36 on the clock Jay Lloyd ran the ball 60 yards into the endzone for a touchdown, bringing the Tenaha lead to 53-0 at the end of the third, with yet another missed field goal by Castillo.
The final quarter of the game started with the Gators in possession of the ball, again this was short lived. The Tenaha team took quick possession of the ball at 10:26 and ran the clock, while keeping possession of the ball and working on their running game. With 2:00 to go on the clock Tigers were stopped by the Gators defense for the first time, stopping the Tenaha offense from making it to the endzone. With 1:41 left in the game the Gateway offense worked their way through Tiger territory but were unable to score as time ran out.
The final score 53-0 Tenaha win, lead scorers for Tenaha were Jay Lloyd, Onterio Thompson, and C.J. Horn. Next week the Tigers host Clarksville on Friday, kickoff at 7:30 p.m.
