Gilmer crashes Center's senior night with 56-17 win

After last week's loss at Rusk, the Center Roughriders returned home Friday night to face a much more challenging opponent - the Gilmer Buckeyes. What was supposed to be a Senior Night celebration soon turned into constant cheers from the Buckeye fans, after handing the Riders a big 56-17 loss.

"Gilmer's a really good football team," defensive coach Tracey Adair said. "Our kids did play with more effort. That's something we stressed all week. Our kids did that and to that extent, we're pleased."

The Riders, as they did with Rusk, struggled defensively as they were not able to stop the Buckeye's strong running game.

After Center opened with a 3-0 lead, Gilmer ran off 35 unanswered points to take a 35-3 lead in the second quarter. JaTerious Evans kickof return touchdown made it 35-9 with a minute left in the half. But Gilmer returned the ensuing kickoff to take a 42-9 lead into the half.

"We still got to get better at tackling," Adair said. "We got to run to the football and tackle."

Seniors on the team were upset to take in such a huge loss on a special night in recognition of them and their hard work.

"It just hurts," senior Kameron Elmer said. "We work so hard everyday and this was not the result we were looking for. Now we just have to get better."

The Riders will hope to up their defensive game, as they host yet another challenging opponent, the Gladewater Bears, at home on September 15 at 7:30 p.m. It is Center's Home Coming Game.
