3A Elkhart proves too much for 2A Shelbyville in teams' season opener

The Shelbyville Dragons had a tough test in their first game of the new season as they faced the visiting Elkhart Elks.

The Elks are a 3A team that returned 11 starters from the squad that posted a 42-28 win over Shelbyville in last season's opener, and held a size advantage over the Dragons.

The result was a 40-23 setback in the Dragons' home opener.

Shelbyville came over firing, building a 7-0 lead on a 78-yard drive that was capped by CJ Kirkwood's scoring run in the first quarter. Shelbyville also mounted a successful goal line stand at its 1-yard line to deny the Elks a first-quarter score. A forced fumble recovered by Sawyer Hendricks thwarted Elkhart's bid.

The Dragon's ensuing drive resulted in a punt, and that set up a 55-yard scoring run by the Elks. A missed PAT left Shelbyville with a 7-6 lead.

Elkhart extended the lead to 12-7 at the half on another touchdown and a missed PAT.

The Leks wore Shelbyville down in the second half, outscoring the Dragons 28-14.

Shelbyville next plays Friday night at Hemphill, which had its opener against San Augustine cancelled Friday.
