Joaquin Rams dominate Deweyville, 61-0
The Joaquin Rams started their season off strong with a 61 - 0 win at home against the Deweyville Pirates on Friday, Aug. 30.
Rams head coach Wade Lawson said their previous scrimmage games against Elysian Fields and Logansport had them ready for Friday’s game against Deweyville.
“I thought we played well tonight,” said Lawson. “We had a good week of practice and preparation - we had two really tough scrimmages that I thought got us ready for tonight.”
The Rams had an action-packed first quarter, running for three touchdowns. Senior Connor Bragg ran in the third TD of the quarter with 5.6 seconds remaining in the period, putting the Rams up, 21-0.
At about the 5 minute mark into the 2nd quarter, a fourth touchdown was ran in by freshman quarterback Cole Bragg.
With 6 minutes and 47 seconds on the clock; a long pass was completed next and ran in for a touchdown by senior Gunner Nelson. That was followed by a 15-yard touchdown by senior Lorenzo “Boogie” Lane.
“We were able to get a lot of kids in, got a lot of playing time...you know - that’s really important,” Lawson said. “It’s a long football season, this was just one little piece of it.”
Completing a 52-yard touchdown, junior Cayden Atkinson, put the score at 49 - 0 early into the third quarter.
Lawson said he was very proud of the offensive line.
“I thought we dominated from the first snap,” he said. “Defensively - I think we held it to ‘em.”
Kicker for the Rams, senior Jesus Bravo, scored the last points of the game with a field goal kicked from the 25-yard line, making the final score 61-0.
After a dominating win against Deweyville, Joaquin took a knee with 30 seconds left on the clock; winning their first game of the season. But Lawson says it’s back to the drawing board for the Rams.
“We don’t want to put in too much tonight,” said Lawson. “We’ve got to get back to the film — looking at and fixing mistakes that we’ve made — and get better.”
The Rams will be on the road this Friday when they take on Ore City with a 7:30 p.m. Kickoff.
