Roughriders fall to Henderson Lions, 63-7
HENDERSON — For the first time this season the Henderson Lions defense accomplished something no other team has done against the Center Roughriders this season — hold the team to less than 300 yards total offense and only one score.
The real story was in the numbers on the scoreboard with the Lions taking a convincing 63-7 win on their home field during Henderson's homecoming. The loss drops the Riders season mark to 1-3.
In Center's first three games they rolled up 401 yards against Tatum in a win; 445 yards total offense in loss to Jefferson and 336 yards offense against Gladewater. Against Henderson the Riders were held to 291 yards total offense.
The Lions also held the Roughrider offense to its lowest scoring output of the season. In each of the first three games Center averaged just over 30 points a game, including 28-51 loss to Jefferson and the prior week's 28-48 loss to Gladewater.
This week the team returns to Roughrider Stadium for a 7:30 p.m. Friday kickoff against 3-1 Grace Community of Tyler. Grace Community is coming off a 42-17 victory over Wills Point.
In last week's game against Henderson, the Lions got on the board on their first drive of the game. It looked like the Riders were going to tie things up late in the first quarter after driving to the 4-yard line but a fumble resulted in a turnover the Lions were able to capitalize on with another touchdown, putting them ahead, 14-0.
With 9:14 left in the second quarter the Riders would get their only score of the game with quarterback Jake Hanson connected with Zacc Smith who leaped over a Henderson defender to make the catch and take the ball across the goal line from 24 yards out.
That 14-7 Henderson advantage would be as close as Center got in the game. The Lions came up with 28 point in the second quarter and another 21 points in the third period.
A blocked Center punt with about four minutes left in the first half was among the plays going against the Roughriders. The blocked punt resulted in a Lions score putting them up 21-7.
The Riders were down 35-7 at the half with Henderson adding another 28 points in the second half to finish Center off, 63-7.
Among team leaders for the Riders on defense are Jake Liker, credited with 10.3 tackles per game. Liker has 32 solo tackles for the year along with nine assists for a total of 41 tackles to his credit.
Tyler Herndon, J. Weathered and C. Crawford, each have a sack on the season and are averaging 0.3 sacks per game.
J. Weathered has 25 solo tackles and nine assists for the season for 35 total tackles. Rounding out tackles for the Riders are Marques Hall, 30 total; and Jase Bird and Tyler Herndon, each with 25.
Rushing leader for the Roughriders remains Keamondre Horace averaging 148.5 yards per game. Horace, a junior, has 594 rushing yards for the season with another 47 yards in pass receptions for 641 yards total offense, or 160.3 yards per game
