Roughriders come off bye week primed for Carthage Bulldog showdown

Center's Coach Ponder says Riders should be competitive on the road against the Bulldogs Friday night
NOTE: This article originally appeared in the Thursday, Oct. 8, print edition of The Light and Champion

Coming off a bye for Week VI of the 2020 season the Center Roughriders this Friday are coming up against what likely could be their biggest challenge of regular season play in the form of the Carthage Bulldogs.

Carthage is the No. 1 ranked team in Class 4A D-II and is coming off a state championship win in the 2019 season. Riders' Scott Ponder, CISD Athletic Director and head football coach said he knew going into the season with a tough schedule of non-district play that things would only become more challenging in district 4-10A D-II.

The Roughriders were ranked the No 10 team in the Week VII ranking released Monday by Associated Press and Dave Campbell's Texas Football. District 10-4A has three of the state's top ranked teams with 4-0 Jasper in the No. 4 ranked slot.

“We've got two top five teams in our district on our district schedule so that's going to be hugely challenging,” he said. “We have played a pre-district schedule that was tough, every opponent we played was a top 20 team.”

That non-district play should have put Center in a good position going into district, he said.

“We have a routine of being up every week and ready to play for a big time ballgame,” Ponder said.

“We haven't played anyone the caliber of Carthage or Jasper but we have played some good teams and we think, for us, the pre-district schedule has been just what we needed and allowed us to play hard, grow and improve and still have success at the same time,” he said.

“We're hoping to take that momentum, our reorganization with the open date, getting fresh and as healthy as possible, and go to Carthage this week to be competitive,” Ponder said.
“We hit the weights hard, the kids do a great job of lifting all the time and they put a lot of effort into that,” Ponder said of last week's practice sessions. “We put a lot of emphasis on lifting and conditioning and as far as running hard after practices. We put an emphasis on the fundamentals and trying to do the little things right.”

Ponder said the off-week should have provided the Roughriders a chance to freshen up both physically and mentally while healing up from some injuries.

“We worked on developing depth. We worked some guys in different positions,” he said. “We used the week and this week to reorganize guys as far as the depth chart.”

Among the areas Ponder and the coaching staff looked at for enhancing depth were receiver, backup on offensive and defensive linemen and a reshuffling of linebackers.

“We're working on getting ourselves ready for the district race, we're certainly focused on Carthage …. it's the number one focus at this point,” Ponder said. “But we're also trying to focus on the district season and kind of have an eye toward the playoffs as far as having our best team on the field.”

Ponder expects to see Carthage linebackers coming at the Roughriders offense on multiple fronts.

“As far as Carthage, they're tremendous — they have great tradition, they're well coached,” he said. “They've got a very big, strong defensive line and athletic linebackers and a very solid scheme on the back end as far as what they do with their secondary.

Ponder said the Bulldogs are going to be hard to block one-on-one.

“Defensively they're a machine, they're big, they're strong up front,” he said. “Their quarterback is a Division I player, their running backs are awesome and they have a great zone running back. We're going to have to do a great job defending the cutback.”

Ponder said the Bulldog offense is very pro-style, a very multiple style of offense.

“We're going to have to be sure our aggressiveness doesn't create opportunities for them to score,” he said.

Last week Carthage defeated Pleasant Grove, 35-7.
