Strong third quarter propelled Fillies past Coastal Bend Cougars

A 19-10 run in the third quarter proved to be the difference in the Fillies 66-56 win over the Coastal Bend Cougars. Panola College was able to survive the Cougars’ game long comebacks behind defensive stops and scoring in key possessions. The Fillies had four players in double figures, led by Maryia Adashchyk with 16. Rounding out the scoring for the Fillies was Alicja Falkowska, Daryna Barcharova and Nyidier Riak with 12, 11 and 10 respectively. Adashcyk, Riak and Falkowska also lead the team in rebounding with 12, 8 and 6. On the defensive end, the Fillies recorded 15 steals, with Weronika Nowakowska and Mikayla Etienne each collecting a team high of 4. The Fillies (8-7, 4-1 in conference) return to action on Wednesday at home against Tyler Junior College at 7:00 pm. ••• After defeating Blinn and Angelina earlier in the week, the Panola College Ponies capped a perfect week with a 77-69 victory over visiting Coastal Bend. Panola got off to a quick 8-2 start and were able to build a double digit lead. The lead would stay near double digits until Coastal Bend finished the first half strong and cut it to 42-37 at half. Panola would have another quick start in the second half building their lead to 56-42 with 14:58 remaining. The game would never be closer than 8 the rest of the way. The Ponies were led by Tariq Simmons with 14 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Lenell Henry added 13 points and 8 rebounds. Franklyn Penn chipped in 12 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists. Panola is now 15-3 on the season and 5-1 in Region XIV. Next game will be Wednesday at Paris.
