Riders fall to No. 1 ranked Carthage Bulldogs, 56-14

Center scheduled to host Shepherd for Game II of district action this Friday night

Jake Liker and the Roughriders defense honed in on the Carthage Bulldogs for 77 tackles, including 44 team solos in Friday's first district game for the Riders.

But that wasn't enough to stop the defending state champs, as they rolled up 56 points to Center's 14 in a lop-sided game at Bulldog Stadium. Liker led Center's defensive effort with 10 tackles, including seven solos while the Riders offense rolled up 338 yards total in the game.

Center's season mark fell to 4-2 while they rode home with a 0-1 district record. Carthage is 4-0 for the year and 1-0 in district 4A-10 play.

Leading Center's ground game was KeAmodre Horace, who was credited with 174 yards rushing in the game followed by Timothy Davis, who added another 64 yards rushing.

Leading the way on the receiving end for Center were Makel Johnson, 39 yards; Jason Callaoway, 30 yards. Quarterback Jake Hanson had 100 yards passing on the night but completed only 7 of 17 attempts as the Bulldogs defense put pressure all around. He had four interceptions in the game.

On defense for the Roughriders, rounding things out were Keshun Hoyt and D. Rankin, each in on seven tackles; and Marques Hall and Colton Crawford, each credited with six total tackles against Carthage.

While the game went the full four quarters, for the Roughriders it was basically over at the halftime break as the Bulldogs added 35 second quarter points and took a 42-7 lead into the locker room. Center would come back in the third quarter with a touchdown play but that was not near enough as Carthage added 14 more points to their tally in the second half to end up with the 56-14 final score.

The Bulldogs hit pay dirt early with 10:44 left in the first quarter when Braeden Wade took down had a 49-yard reception on the opening series from Carthage quarterback Quarterback Kai Horton down to the 2-yard line where he was stopped by Jermaine Preston and Marques Hall. He would score from there.

With 4:35 left in the first quarter the Bulldogs were on the threshold of scoring again in a fourth and 2-yards to go situation. But the Roughrider defense lived up to their potential and stopped the Bulldogs offensive machine with the Riders taking over.

In the last couple of minutes of the opening quarter the Bulldogs stopped a Center drive when a Roughrider pass was picked off, keeping the score close at 7-0, Carthage.

With less than a minute off the clock in the second quarter Carthage extended their lead to 14-0. But on their next series, the Roughriders would keep the game within reach.

The Roughriders showed a big offensive spark on the first play after the Bulldog kickoff as KeAmodre Horace weaved his way through Carthage defenders on a 77-yard rushing play which got rain-soaked Riders' fans excited. Carthage lead 14-7 at the 11 minute mark in the second quarter.

The Bulldogs came back to answer with their own TD with just more than 9 minutes left in the first half on a 23-yard pass play, giving them a 21-7 advantage.

With 6:22 left in the half, the Carthage defense would again put pressure on Hanson as a pass was picked off from about 65 yards to stretch the lead to 28-7. The Bulldogs added another TD at the 1:59 mark in the second quarter and led, 35-7.

But the Bulldogs were not done. With 0:21 seconds left in the half, Carthage quarterback Horton connected on a 44-yard pass play to advance the Bulldogs to 42-7 as both teams headed to their locker rooms.

The lone scoring play of the second half for Center came on a 15-yard Hanson to Makel Johnson. The third quarter ended with Carthage taking a commanding 49-14 lead. They would score one more TD in the fourth quarter to cinch the game at 56-14.

Center is scheduled to host Shepherd this Friday with a 7:30 p.m., kickoff. Shepherd was beat by Madisonville this past week, 28-0.

While the outing against Carthage was not the best for the Roughriders, it still allowed several players to hit new benchmarks after the first six games of the 2020 season. Hanson went over the 1,000-yard passing mark with 1,028 yards to his credit.

Horace has averaged 214.3 yards per game rushing and finished Friday's contest with 1,286 yards rushing. With his 41 yards in receptions for the season, his total offensive out put was 1,327 yards after the first six games.

On the receiving end for the Riders, Makel Johnson has 309 yards on 24 catches; Jason Calloway has 268 yards on 18 receptions and MarMar Evans had 218 yards receiving on 16 reception.

On defense, Colton Crawford leads the Riders with 62 total tackles and with 19 of those being solos. Liker has 61 tackles to his credit with 33 solos and senior K. Hoyt has been in on 53 tackles for Center, including 27 solos.

Crawford also leads the Roughriders in sacks with eight so far in the season.
