Hiram Harrison notches 500th career win

Roughriders head basketball coach's career spans five decades and criss-crosses Texas

Center Roughriders Head Basketball Coach Hiram Harrison hit a new major career milestone recently with his 500th career win as a high school varsity coach.

Johnnie B. “Hawk” Carter, assistant director of the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches, said the achievement is a significant one in a coach's career.

“The 500th win in a coach's career is a significant milestone,” Carter said. “For Coach Harrison to reach that level shows that he has been a consistent winner over a long period of time.”

While the wins are impressive, Carter said the way Harrison's teams have played over the decades offers a positive reflection on the Center coach's style.

“Coach Harrison is highly respected throughout the state of Texas not only for his wins but also how his teams play with dignity and pride,” he said. Carter said Harrison can expect more attention bestowed on him and the milestone during the Texas University Interscholastic League State Basketball Tournament.

“The UIL honors coaches who have achieved 500 varsity wins, 600  varsity wins, 700  varsity wins, etc., during the state basketball tournaments each year,” Carter said. While the state tournament was cut short for the 2019-2020 school year due to the COVID pandemic, this year's state tournament is tentatively slated in March 2021 in San Antonio

Harrison's coaching career has spanned five decades — from the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, 2010s and now the 2020s — and more than 500 miles across Texas, from El Paso out west to the piney woods of Center and Shelby County.

Last week he said the recognition is due in large part to the players he has had the privilege of coaching over the years along with assistant coaches over the years and support from the community, parents and fans.

Winning games is a team effort, he said. On a personal note, Harrison's career has been a labor of love.

“This is all I ever wanted to do was coach,” he said.
