Center Lady Riders kickoff new season with busy week

Head Volleyball Coach Madison Holyfield takes over helm of Lady Riders program

The first class of the 2019-2020 school year for Center High School is still days away but at least one extracurricular group has put in several days of practice and hit the road already.

The Lady Riders Volleyball team under the direction of new Head Coach Madison Holyfield held a play day on Saturday, Aug. 3, had a practice session Monday and headed to Hemphill Tuesday for scrimmages for the varsity, junior varsity and freshmen squads. The varsity Lady Riders are scheduled to be participating in tourney action in Palestine from Thursday through Saturday of this week while the JV and ninth grade squads are set to travel to Gary on Friday for a tournament.

Holyfield is assisted by Steven Hennigan and Sara Rupp. Center ISD Athletic Director Scott Ponder said Holyfield served as the Lady Riders soccer team coach last school year.

“She has a strong volleyball background,” he said. “We've totally reorganized that staff with a lot of fresh faces.”

Ponder said the Lady Riders coaching staff has invested a lot of time in preparation for the new season over the summer months. A lot of focus has been placed on what the team will be doing tactically on the court, in practice all the way down to details like feeding teammates after games.

He said this should be an exciting season for Lady Riders volleyball.

On Tuesday, Aug. 13, the Lady Riders will host Elysian Fields in matches for freshmen, JV and varsity play. The first matches are scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Between Tuesday and Sept. 24 the Lady Riders have a busy schedule of tournaments and matches. District action begins on Sept. 24 when the JV and varsity teams travel to Huntington.
