Two vehicle crash on US 96 causes fire, March 20

On March 20, 2018, at approximately 10:00a.m., the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) responded to a two vehicle crash on US 96 in Shelby County.  The crash occurred approximately one (1) mile North of Center.

Preliminary reports indicate that a 2006 Kenworth truck tractor semi-trailer transporting timber was traveling northbound on US 96 in the inside traffic lane.  A 2012 Freightliner was also traveling northbound on US 96 in the outside traffic lane.  The 2006 Kenworth reportedly changed lanes when unsafe and struck the Freightliner.  The impact of the collision caused the Freightliner to travel off the roadway and strike a tree.  After colliding with the tree, the Freightliner overturned and caught fire.

The driver of the Kenworth, 53-year-old Daniel Stanley of Huntington, did not sustain any injuries.

The driver of the Freightliner, 58-year-old Robert Jones of Beaumont, was transported by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment.  His condition is unknown.

This crash remains under investigation and there are no additional details to be released at this time.
