Joaquin teacher nominated for national award
Joaquin High School agriculture teacher Brett Gaylord has been nominated for the 2017-2018 national LifeChanger of the Year award.
Sponsored by the National Life Group Foundation, LifeChanger of the Year recognizes and rewards the very best K-12 educators and school district employees across the United States who are making a difference in the lives of students by exemplifying excellence, positive influence and leadership.
Gaylord was nominated by his friend, Elizabeth Wolfe. He was recognized for always being there for his students and assisting them with anything they may need help with. Whether it's helping them build a hay ring barbecue pit trailer or working with their show animals, Gaylord is always available.
Gaylord and his colleagues often stay after school, checking on projects and preparing for contests his students will be attending. On the weekends, he can be found at local shows with his students, helping them with their project or show animals.
“I have personally seen Brett go without things he has wanted or needed to help less fortunate students who were struggling financially, buy a show animal or feed money,” Wolfe said. “He is an amazing instructor and person. All of his kids love him and appreciate him for everything he has done.”
Each school year, LifeChanger of the Year receives hundreds of nominations from all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Seventeen individual LifeChanger of the Year awards will be given during the 2017-2018 school year.
The grand prize winner receives $10,000 to be shared with their school. Four finalist receive $5,000 each; 10 LifeChanger Award winner will receive $3,000 each; and a Spirit Award winner – given to the nominee whose community demonstrates the most support for their nomination – will receive $5,000; and a Spotlight Award Winner – given to a nominee in a specific discipline each year.
Winners are announced via surprise award ceremonies held at their schools. The grand prize finalists will also be honored at a national awards ceremony in spring 2018 in Bermuda, where the Grand Prize Winner will be revealed.
