Tenaha has rematch with Gateway Charter in playoff game 2 p.m. Friday at Mabank

UIL 2A-Div. II playoffs Tenaha 74, Colmesneil 0 (Final)

The Tenaha Tigers started off the 2017 2A-Div. II Region 3 playoffs with a bang. The Tigers outscored the Colmesneil Bulldogs 74-0 at Dragon Stadium in Shelbyville Nov. 16 for their playoff opener.

The Tigers now have a rematch with their Sept. 15 opponent, Gateway Charter, which Tenaha beat 53-0. the game will be played at 2 p.m. Friday at Mabank High School.

Against Colmesneil, the Tigers recorded thier fourth shut out this season. It’s was also the largest margin of victory the Tigers have enjoyed all year. Even more impressive perhaps, is the fact that Tenaha hasn’t had an opponent score multiple touchdowns against them since the season opener against the Joaquin Rams.

Although the final results speak for themselves, the Tigers did find themselves off to a slow start. On their first offensive possession they found themselves in a fourth and one situation just three short yards from the Bulldogs’ end zone. Colmesneil stood tall and prevented a first down, receiving possession of the football for their efforts.

“It was just, hey we’re going to try this because we can, but they’re [Colmesneil] huge.” Head coach Craig Horn of Tenaha said, “They’re big guys, so you can’t drive that square peg into that round hole when they’re that big. That was just on us [coaches], not the kid’s fault. Tonight, we had a couple missed tackles, some missed assignments, but the kids played well after that first drive and executed extremely well. The game of emotion is what we have to do a better job with, especially early on.”

From that point on it seemed as if the Tigers scored at will. They were able to land touchdowns on every offensive possession from that point on, apart from their final one in which time expired.

Senior quarterback C.J. Horn went on a tear for the Tigers. He ended the night with two touchdowns rushing as well as four in the passing game. Horn wasn’t alone in his success. Senior running back Onterio Thompson also had a big night. He accounted for three of the Tigers’ rushing touchdowns. The biggest touchdown of the night yardage-wise was a huge 81-yard touchdown run courtesy of senior Trai Gardner. Gardner was also the recipient of one of Horn’s touchdown passes. Senior Cody Foshee, Junior Jay Lloyd, and Sophomore Erik Smith were responsible for the remaining three touchdown receptions.

Emotions ran high for Colmesneil late in the game, and it was apparent to anyone watching that things were becoming a bit heated on the field. To the credit of both teams involved, things never escalated into a true fight.

“I felt like we came out a little flat.” Coach Horn said, “Even in the first round, a team that comes out emotional like Colmesneil did can give you some problems if they’re playing at a higher intensity than you. We have to make sure we do a better job of monitoring that and not being flat, and I don’t think we’ll have those struggles from here on out. I was proud of the kids and the way they played. They played clean. They played hard. The game got chippy obviously. It’s my job to determine how we go from there. My kids just do what I ask them to do. We didn’t start leading into that by throwing punches or talking trash. My kids just executed and did what I asked them to do, and the scoreboard reflected that.”

Tenaha knows that their biggest challenges lie ahead of them. After the game quarterback CJ Horn spoke about preparation for the upcoming area playoff game. “We just have to take it to practice. We have to practice hard. We can’t come out flat like we did tonight. We have to execute on all parts of the offense, running the ball and in the passing game.
