Defending Louisiana champs outlast Jonesboro-Hodge, 34-19

Coming off of an undefeated, state championship season, the Logansport Tigers, met Jonesboro-Hodge in a surprise home game.

Originally schedule as a road game in Jonesboro, the change of venue to Logansport was a result of heavy rains from Hurricane Harvey, which made the Jonesboro-Hodge field unfit for play.

Logansport wasn't perfect, but made some key plays to post the 34-19 win.

“Emotions were high and mistakes were made," coach Kevin Magee said. "I'm very proud of the team win tonight. We will continue to focus on being fundamentally sound.

Both teams first offensive drives yielded no first downs.

The Logansport defense, led by junior linebacker Devin Gabriel, took command of the game by forcing two fumbles on the next two Jonesboro-Hodge drives.

Capitalizing on the opportunity, Logansport had back-to-back rushing touchdowns by Tresmin Brown and Madrid Johnson to make the score 14-0.

Logansport extended the lead to 20-7 in the second quarter as senior quarterback Dalton Shaw -- coming off of an all-state performance last season --  connected with TCU commit John Stephens for a 24-yard touchdown pass.

Just when Jonesboro-Hodge thought it would deny Logansport an additional touchdown before the half, Coach Kevin Magee took advantage of the one second remaining on the clock.

Shaw connected to Stephens again in the corner of the end zone to bring the score 26-19 as the half came to an end.

Cramps and humidity played a part in the scoreless third quarter.

In the final quarter, Loganspor reached the end zone one final time when Johnson scored a rushing touchdown from the 7-yard-line.

Brown led Logansport with 132 yards rushing and one touchdown. Johnson had one rushing and one receiving touchdown. John Stephens had two touchdown receptions on the night. Dalton Shaw completed 15 of 29 pass attempts, for a total of 206 passing yards with one interception.

Leading tackler for the Tigers, Devin Gabriel, had 12 total tackles, two, made his presence known with 10 tackles, which included one tackle for loss and one forced fumble.

Next Friday, Class 1A Logansport will be on the road to face Class 2A Lakeview Gators. Game is time set for 7 p.m.
