Shelbyville wins semi-final match-up with Hearne
The Shelbyville Dragons defeated the Hearne Eagles in the 2A State Semi-Finals in San Antonio. This gives the Dragons the opportunity at a state title tomorrow against the Gruver Greyhounds. The final score of the semi-finals game was 83-51, Shelbyville.
Jay Buckley led the Dragons with 28 points. Buckley also led the team in assists with nine and steals with five. Jordan Boykins was second on the point-total list with 24, 12 of which were scored in the first quarter. Cole Ferguson ended the game with 13 points, and he also led the Dragons in rebounds with 15. Sophomore LD Coleman continues to see increased use within the Dragons’ game plan. Coleman added eight points to Shelbyville’s total. Kurtrick Allen added six points against the Eagles. Kolby Parker stood tall in the paint taking charge after charge to give the Dragons the ball. Parker and Jakivian Calhoun each added two points.
Shelbyville’s FG percentage on the day was 51.5%. As a team, the Dragons were able to crash the boards for a total of 43 rebounds, 17 on offense and 26 on defense. Shelbyville’s best quarter was the third, in which they shot 60% from the field and posted 31 total points in the period.
The Dragons have now surpassed their success from last year. Shelbyville fell in the semi-finals last year to the West Texas Comanches, who would go on to win the 2A State Championship. Now the Dragons look to go even further as they prepare for the ultimate prize of a state title.
No. 9 ranked Gruver upset the No. 3 Martin’s Mill Mustangs to earn a spot in Saturday’s championship game. The final score in that match-up was 55-42, Greyhounds. Gruver was bolstered by a huge 33-point performance from Jalin Conyers.
The Dragons look strong headed into this matchup averaging 88.5 points per game in the playoffs while allowing only 57.17 points per game.
