Center cross country runners have strong showing at SFA Invitational Meet on Saturday

Roughriders' Gonzalez, Garcia place in top 10 out of 230 runners in varsity boys 5,000-meter run

The Center Roughriders cross country boys varsity team placed two runners in the top 10 in the 5,000 meter run out of more than 230 runners in Saturday's SFA High School Lumberjack Invitational Meet.

Center had four runners who earned medals at the meet.

Jesus Gonzalez placed ninth with a time of 17:20.39 while Jacob Garcia placed 10th and had a time of 17:38.21. As a team, the Center boys varsity squad placed 8th out of a field of 29 teams.

In addition to high school boys and girls, Center also had middle school runners participate in the Nacogdoches

Coach Doug Boone said he was pleased with all of the runners' performance for their first outing of the season.

“I thought they did well for their first meet, especially considering the competition they faced,” he said. Among the competition were several larger schools, including Lufkin, Nacogdoches, Longview Pine Tree, Livingston and others.

In addition to Gonzalez and Garcia earning medals for their top 10 finishes in the varsity boys 5,000 meter run, Boone had a couple of other medalists too. In the JV division, Roughrider Raul Rebollar placed 10th in the 5,000 meter run while Center Middle School student Jasmine Olivarez placed seventh in the girls 3,200 meter run.

“I was really happy for our four top 10 medalists, Jesus Gonzalez, Jacob Garcia, Raul Rebollar and Jasmine Olivarez,” Boone said.

In the varsity girls division for the 3,200-meter run, Center's Angie Morales placed 25th in a field of 127 runners. Morales's time was 14:28.21. Center's girls varsity team placed 7th out of a field of 15 teams.

Rounding out results in girls varsity action were Adriana Bacenas, 30th, with a time of 15:00.66;

Jessica Alvarado, 52nd — 15:34.20; Gracie Whisenant, 59th — 15:47.63; Taylor Horton, 75th — 16:29.97; Stephanie Garcia, 87th — 17:10.21; and Abi Chavez, 105th — 18.29.36.

Other results for Center varsity boys, included Benjamin Garcia, 75th — 19.54.73; Jesus Bustos, 77th — 19.57.07; Rafael Gonzalez, 98th — 20:28.50; Higinio Zamarron, 107th — 20:43.48; and Eliseo De La Cruz, 138th — 21:15.29.

In the junior varsity boys division, Center's Raul Rebollar placed 10th in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 20:22.84 out of a field of 177 JV runners. Center JV placed fourth in team standings out of 18 teams competing.

Other Roughrider JV boys placing, included Peyton Montes, 18th — 20:55.05; Caleb Garcia, 26th — 21:08.53; David Cervantes, 41st — 21:44.23; Omar Aviles, 44th — 21:47.25; Jose Valdez, 46th — 21:49.74; and Osvaldo Guevara, 71st — 22:50.00.

In the middle school 3,200 meter run, in addition to Jasmine Olivares' seventh place medal finishing pace, Gabby Whisenant placed 18th with a time of 16:20.85; Yuliana Garcia placed 23rd with a time of 16:40.72; Jasmin Arena-mateos placed 92nd with a time of 21:53.03; Andrea Camacho placed 93rd with a time of 21:56.52; and Giselle Zandejas placed 102nd with a time of 23:06.25.

Center Middle School placed 6th in a field of 11 teams at the SFA meet.

In the middle school boys 3,200 meter race, Roddy Gonzalez placed 17th with a time of 13:43.07; Edwin Marquez placed 33rd with a time of 14:26.22; Braxton Riley placed 66th with a time of 15:35.31; Jason Arcibar placed 79th with a time of 15:58.99; and Kevin Morin placed 113th with a time of 17:48.40.

The Center Middle School boys placed seventh out of 10 teams entered.

Also representing Shelby County were long distance runners from Tenaha High School. The Tenaha varsity boys team placed 18th out of a field of 29 teams.

Tenaha's Irving Barona, 94th — 20:25.47; Alan Mosquedo, 153rd — 21:37.38; Daniel Loredo, 155th — 21:38.37; Devin Lampley, 156th — 21:39.62; Evan Plata, 218th — 24:47.72.
