It's Turf Time at Roughrider Stadium
It's turf time at Center ISD's Roughrider Stadium as the installation of artificial turf on the football field and track and field components continues.
The nearly $800,000 project got started in early June and is scheduled to be completed by early August — in time for the 2020 Roughrider football team to begin practice sessions for the upcoming season, according to Scott Ponder, CISD Athletic Director and Head Football Coach.
Crews from Austin-based Hellas Sports Construction have been warding off heat and rain as they have been busy ripping up the aging old turf and were seen on Wednesday installing a new generation of artificial turf on the playing field.
Taking shape on center field is an iconic depiction of Center's Roughrider while the end zones feature “Center” in large block gold letters, outlined in white on a field of purple.
In March the Center ISD Board of Trustees approved the low bid submitted for renovation and replacement of artificial turf at Roughrider Stadium along with and track and field components.
Hellas was the low bidder on the projects with a bid of $794,690.
Ponder said once completed, the work should provide the district not only with an upgraded football field, but with track and field components which should allow Center to once again host track and field meets. He said due to the poor condition of the track and related elements, Center has not hosted track meets for several years.
Work will include resurfacing the track, construction of shot put and discus rings behind the visitor side seating, and renovation of the long-jump pit.
