Grass is always greener - when it is artifical turf at Roughrider Stadium

Roughrider Stadium work starts this week with replacement turf, new track & field

The grass is always greener — especially when it is artificial turf.

But even artificial turf needs maintenance, repair and replacement.

The process of placing the artificial turf at Center High School's Roughrider Stadium got underway this week as crews from Austin-based Hellas Sports Construction are on the field.

Initally they are removing the aging artificial turf on the football field beginning this week.

In March the Center ISD Board of Truestees approved the low bid submitted for renovation and replacement of artificial turf at Roughrider Stadium along with and track and field components.

Hellas was the low bidder on the projects with a bid of $794,690.

We had three proposals and that work will start June 1 and be completed by August,” said Arnie Kelley, interim superintendent at the March meeting.

Center ISD Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Scott Ponder said once completed the work should provide the district with not only an upgraded football field, but with track and field components which should allow Center to once again host track and field meets.

Work will include resurfacing the track, construction of shot put and discus rings behind the visitor side seating, and renovation of the long-jump pit.
