Dixie League tourney action begins this weekend in Center
The sound of baseball bats clinking against baseballs should be a common sound in the coming month as Dixie League tournament action returns to Center.
City of Center Recreation Director Jason Mitchell said tournament play is scheduled to begin this weekend with the Dixie Boys 13-14 State Tournament. He said 12 teams are expected in Center this weekend.
“I know that this is not the typical season that we have all become accustom to,” Mitchell said. “However, I have been working to maintain some sort of tournament season for Center Youth Baseball and our City.”
That could work out in Center's favor, Mitchell said.
“There will not be any district tournaments in the state.,” he said. “Any team wanting to play post season in the state tournament will be allowed to play. There could be a possibility each actual tournament will have more teams than usually slotted.”
More than 80 teams, their coaches, families and fans are expected in Center over about the next month, Mitchell said.
Words of support for the city's efforts to salvage tournament play came from Deborah Chadwick, President of the Shelby County Area Chamber of Commerce.
“Jason Mitchell has been working hard to maintain some sort of Baseball Tournament season for the Center Youth Baseball and our City with this unprecedented spring and summer,” she said.
Chadwick encouraged local residents and businesses to provide a positive impression on the players, coaches, families and fans.
“Let's make sure our visiting guests receive a huge Center, Texas welcome!” she said. “Good luck to all the teams and players.”
Below is a list of the tournaments and dates. Mitchell said there is a possibility play could start on Friday night with schools starting back so soon.
• Dixie Boys 13-14 State Tournament July 11-16 (12 teams)
• Dixie Youth Super Series South Regional AAA Division I and Division II (9-10yr old) August 1-3 (22 teams)
• Dixie Youth Super Series South Regional Ozone Division I and Division II (11-12yr old) August 1-3 (15 teams)
• Dixie Youth Super Series Championships (7,9, and 11yr old) August 8-10 (32 teams)
“The number of teams could change as we get closer to the tournaments,” Mitchell said.
