Center High tennis team advances to area round of playoffs

Roughriders take down Rusk in Monday matches

The Center Riders tennis team had little trouble knocking off Rusk Monday to take the Class 4A District 19 Championship.

But coach Leon Dykes expects competition to get tougher as the Roughriders move onto Area action Thursday as they take on Gatesville.

We played the fourth ranked team and knew we’d probably win,” Dykes said. “We got 10 match wins in before the rain started and swept the competition.”

Center is ranked No. 1 in the region and No. 8 in state for 4A schools.

We’re 10-2 going into area,” said Dykes, whose teams have claimed top spots in court action over a number of years.

The history of our program always plays a part when we go up against someone,” he said. “We’re picked to go far in the regional bracket.”

Should Center defeat Gatesville in Madisonville this week they would advance to regional quarter final action Monday and play the winner of Palestine and Waco Robinson.

We’ve got a solid team top to bottom for both boys and girls,” Dykes said.
