Center cross country teams place high at SFA Meet
The Center Roughrider varsity boys cross country team on Saturday placed second out of a field of 36 schools participating at the SFA Invitational Cross Country Meet in Nacogdoches.
Head cross country coach Doug Boone said he was excited with the stellar performance in the team's first outing of the 2018 season. He said the finish was especially pleasing considering the caliber of competition in the event.
“That's pretty good considering we were running against a lot of Houston area schools and other schools like Conroe, Lufkin, Pine Tree and a lot of others,” Boone said. “They were tough, really solid and it's pretty unique what they did.”
Placing in top spots for the Riders were Jacob Garcia, Jesus Gonzalez, Jon Gustos, Alex Hurta, Adrian Hurta, Ewin Morin and Ben Garcia.
The Lady Riders cross county team also had a strong showing at the SFA meet, finishing 10th out of a field of 20 girls varsity teams.
Jessica Alvorado, a junior, had a strong showing for the girls team, as did Danilela Medina, who despite running hurt, placed 65th out of a field of more than 200 entrants, Boone said.
Gracie Whisenant, Ally Jones, Angie Morales, Cheyenne Byrnes and Val Ramierz rounded the effort for the Lady Riders varsity.
Boone said the JV boys team placed 13th out of 20 teams while the JV girls placed 7th out of 12 teams. Rafael Gonzales had a 5th place finish out of 174 runners for JV competition.
“I'm really proud of how they competed,” Boone said.
