3 days of Dixie Youth League tournament action in full swing

Center City Park plays hosts to Dixie Youth Super Series action Saturday-Monday

Dixie Youth League tournament action was in full swing over the weekend with back-to-back baseball on five fields at Center Park.

More than 35 teams were scheduled to be in Center Saturday through Monday for the Dixie Youth Super Series South Regional AAA Division I and Division II for 9-10 year-olds; and 11-and-12 year old action for the Dixie Youth Super Series South Regional Ozone Division I and II, according to Jason Mitchell, City of Center Recreation Director.

Tournament action is scheduled to conclude on Monday afternoon.

The 9-and-10 year-old tournament had 22 teams scheduled while there were 15 slated in the 11-12 year-old action.

In mid-July Center City Park hosted about 12 teams for the Dixie Boys 13-14 State Tournament on July 11-16. This coming weekend, Center is scheduled to host as many as 32 teams for the Dixie Youth Super Series Championships for ages 7-19 and 11-year-olds Aug. 8-10.

In all, more than 80 teams from across the region was scheduled to be in Center for the three weekends of tournament action.

Mitchell said with the COVID-19 pandemic this year's youth baseball season has been anything but normal. While Center has traditionally hosted a number of youth tournaments over the summer, the status to that baseball action remained uncertain until much later than usual.

Words of support for the city's efforts to salvage tournament play earlier came from Deborah Chadwick, President of the Shelby County Area Chamber of Commerce.

Jason Mitchell has been working hard to maintain some sort of Baseball Tournament season for the Center Youth Baseball and our City with this unprecedented spring and summer,” she said.

Chadwick encouraged local residents and businesses to provide a positive impression on the players, coaches, families and fans.

Let's make sure our visiting guests receive a huge Center, Texas welcome!” she said in early July. “Good luck to all the teams and players.”
