Center, Tenaha cross country runners among tops in Texas

Shelby County was well represented in Saturday's Texas State UIL Cross Country Championships in Round Rock

ROUND ROCK — Out of 600 of the top cross country high school male athletes in Texas, Shelby County was well represented with Center High School and Tenaha High School runners placing in their respective classifications.

Shelby County had several runners in Class 4A and Class 2A qualify for the Texas UIL State Cross Country Championships held Saturday, Nov. 9, in Round Rock.

In Class 4A, Center's Jacob Garcia, a CHS senior, placed 22nd out of 100 runners entered. Garcia had a time of 16:06.24 in the 5,000-meter run.

Jesus Gonzalez, also a Center High senior, finished 85th in Class 4A with a time of 16:57.23 in the 5,000-meter competition. Doug Boone is the Center ISD cross country coach.

At the district meet held in October in Huntsville, Boone had 15 runners bring home medals in high school and middle school categories.

As as team, Tenaha High School finished 14th out of more than 40 Class 2A schools represented with this being the first THS cross country team to ever qualify for the state meet, school officials said.

Tenaha's Oscar Flores, a junior, finished 46th in the Division 2A, 5,000-meter run with a time of 17:24.64. Irvin Barona, also a Tenaha High school junior, finished 64th in the 5,000-meter run in Class 2A with a time of 17:44.90.

Tenaha High School junior Flores Eduardo finished the 5,000-meter course with a time of 17:57.25 in Class 2A in 71st place.

Rounding out team standings for Tenaha were sophomore Alan Mosqueda with a time of 19:31.92 and Daniel Loredo, a freshman, with a time of 19:33.34.

Tenaha's Varsity Cross Country team recently participated in the Region III Championships held in Huntsville.  They placed 4th out of 26 teams to qualify for the State Championship held Saturday in Round Rock.

This is the first Tenaha team to advance to the State level. Team members junior, Irvin Barona, junior, Oscar Flores, sophomore, Alan Mosqueda, junior, Eduardo Flores, and freshman, Daniel Loredo, are pictured above.

The team is looking forward to competing in their first State Championship.  The Cross Country team is coached by Lauri Sisk.
