Shelbyville High Class of 2020 Outdoor Commencement Ceremony held Friday, June 26
More than a month after the Shelbyville High School Class of 2020 held a virtual graduation on May 22, the class, parents, family and friends were honored Friday evening with an outdoor ceremony at Dragon Stadium.
The virtual graduation was held during the uncertainty of the COVID-19/coronavirus era as national, state and local leaders grappled with how — and if — the economy and public gatherings would resume. Gov. Greg Abbott and Texas Education Agency officials later eased restrictions on holding public gatherings which had been limited to groups of no more than 10.
Access to Dragon Stadium was limited to 10 guests per graduate with social distancing guidelines in place.
Shelbyville High School Principal Mario Osby presented the class of Supt. Dr. Ray West and the Shelbyville ISD Board of Trustees represented by Etola Jones.
Following the traditional “Pomp and Circumstance” processional, graduate Whittany Payne provided the invocation while Osby gave the welcome.
Honor graduates were introduced by Osby and Patty Bays. Mickenzie Murry gave the Salutatorian address and Emily Nicosia provided the Valedictorian address.
Osby had the students perform the traditional turning of the tassels and Brittany Payne gave the benediction.
