Injured motorcyclist air evacuated after receiving severe injuries in Joaquin crash

UPDATE: Sunday evening from Texas DPS:
SHELBY COUNTY – Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Troopers investigated a crash Saturday evening, Aug. 15, on FM 2787, just south of US 84.

The preliminary crash investigation indicates at approximately 5:30 p.m., a 2003 Chevrolet pickup was towing a disabled 1987 Harley Davidson motorcycle.

The Chevrolet pickup pulled the disabled motorcycle over a set of railroad tracks when the rider fell off the motorcycle.

The driver of the Chevrolet is identified as Earl Dunn, 55, from Joaquin. Dunn was not injured. The rider of the disabled motorcycle is identified as Charles Smith, 64, also from Joaquin.

Smith was transported to LSU Medical Center in Shreveport for treatment.

EARILER REPORT FROM SATURDAY EVENING:

A motorcyclist was air evacuated by helicopter Saturday evening, Aug. 15, from a crash scene on FM 2787 just off of U.S. Hwy 84 in Joaquin.

Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper on the scene said the victim was riding a motorcycle being pulled with a rope behind a pickup truck when the rider lost control while going over a railroad crossing on FM 2887. Officers said the victim was not wearing a helmet and sustained severe head injuries.

The victim had been treated and stabilized in as Allegiance EMS unit while awaiting the air evac helicopter.

Emergency workers set up a landing zone for the helicopter off of FM 2787 in Joaquin off of Hwy 84 & behind Nu Way.

Among emergency workers on the scene were Joaquin Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue units, Pct. 3 Shelby County Constable Roy Cheatwood, Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, Allegiance Ambulance, Texas Game Warden, DeSoto Parish Sheriff's Office & Texas DPS are among those on the scene.

Officials at the scene said the victim was being air lifted to a hospital in Shreveport.

More information will be released as it becomes available from DPS.
