Center Elementary honors Shelby County Veterans
By Leon Aldridge, Editor and Publisher
Nov. 11, 2021 - The Center Elementary School, in conjunction with Center High School, expressed gratitude Wednesday to all area veterans in recognition of Veterans Day November 11. The special event included the arrival of a U.S. Army helicopter from Fort Polk, La., and an opportunity for students to visit the aircraft, sit in it, ask questions of the pilot, and have their picture taken. The helicopter arrived at 9:00 a.m. as Veterans were being escorted by the Center Roughrider Band in a parade from the high school parking lot to the elementary school parking lot. Students and visitors cheered the military veterans as they drove by and crossed Roughrider Drive to the elementary school. After the parade, veterans had an opportunity to interact with the students, enjoy a static display inside the school honoring veterans, and tour the Army helicopter. A barbecue lunch was provided from 11 a.m. to 11:40 a.m. for the veterans. ‘A Salute to Veterans’ section is inside today’s print edition of The Light and Champion.
