ICYMI: Texas AFL-CIO Endorses MJ Hegar For U.S. Senate

Yesterday, the Texas AFL-CIO co-endorsed MJ Hegar, a decorated combat veteran and working mom, in her bid for U.S. Senate. The Texas AFL-CIO brings together teachers, manufacturers, service workers, lawyers, and traders to secure safe jobs, decent paychecks and benefits, equal opportunities, and dignity for Texas workers.

“M.J. Hegar has brought a new energy to Texas politics, a sterling record of service to the nation, and a working class perspective to her campaign that resonates with our members,” said Texas AFL-CIO President Rick Levy.

“Having come from a working class family, I know firsthand that our workers are the backbone of Texas communities. I look forward to working closely with my friends in the labor movement to defeat Senator Cornyn and fight for fair working conditions, affordable health care, and clean government,” said MJ Hegar.

Throughout the campaign, MJ Hegar has proved she can effectively harness grassroots enthusiasm and excitement. In the March 3rd primary, MJ took a commanding first place, receiving over 400,000 votes from across Texas and winning over 100 counties. In addition, MJ has raised over $4.8 million dollars from over 42,000 people and received donations from 190 counties in Texas.

In recognition of the strong campaign she is running, MJ has received the endorsement of key Texas labor groups such as the Transport Workers Union, with over 150,000 airline, railroad, and transit workers nationally; United Steelworkers, the largest industrial union in North America; the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers 66, which covers south Texas's electrical grid work; the Southwest Pipe Trades, representing welders, pipefitters, and tradespeople across the Southwest; and grassroots Democratic clubs around the state.
