Streetscape construction advancing to new corner of downtown square; landscaping work in progress

Traffic being rerouted as construction advances

Trees are sprouting up in downtown Center as part of the city of Center's streetscape revitalization project while new traffic detours are in place as the main focus of construction activity moves to a new quadrant of the downtown square.

Center City Manager Chad Nehring told city council members at a Monday meeting the work on the second quadrant of the square — the half block area stemming out of the Nacogdoches Street and Austin Street intersection was nearing completion. As work around that intersection where the probation office, Bounds Insurance and David Masterson's DVM Gallery is located it paved the way for workers to move on.

“Upon reopening, the contractor will begin detour of traffic to allow demolition and renovation of the intersection at Tenaha/Logansport” streets, Nehring said.

The Austin Street area between Nacogdoches and San Augustine streets was reopened to one-way traffic on Wednesday. That was the same day through traffic at the intersection of Shelbyville Street/Nacogdoches or Tenaha/Logansport streets was blocked.

“Upon reopening, the contractor will begin detour of traffic to allow demolition and renovation of the intersection at Tenaha/Logansport” streets, Nehring said.

However, limited access is still available for local traffic needing access to local businesses.

Motorists traveling around and in the vicinity of the downtown Center square discovered some new detours this week, depending on their direction of travel.

As of Wednesday morning through traffic on the portion of Shelbyville Street running in front of Deb's Boutique, just past Farmers State Bank is completely closed.

The section of Shelbyville Street which runs in front of Center Floral, Morrison Insurance and Farmers State Bank is open for local traffic but closed to through traffic.

Through traffic on Nacogdoches Street is blocked, but local traffic for customers heading to Las Margarita's restaurants, East Texas Engraving, Town and Country Real Estate and Primp Spa and Salon is open.

Nehring said some work continues around the square.

“Most mid-block crosswalks are installed and exterior sidewalks are still being renovated in multiple areas,” he said. “As they move into Q3 (a half-block section from both directions of the Tenaha/Logansport intersection), all crosswalks will be completed.”

Residents and visitors to the downtown area could see period lighting which was recently installed, be turned on.

“It is anticipated that electrical mains allowing for light operation will be installed soon as landscape installation in the first two quadrants and interior of Q4 (the half block stretching along the downtown square from the Shelbyville//San Augustine intersection) should also begin this month,” Nehring said.

Traffic detours

• The intersection of San Augustine and Shelbyville Streets is blocked for through traffic attempting to drive on Shelbyville Street in front of Farmers State Bank.

• Logansport Street is closed at the intersection of Porter Street toward the square. Tenaha Street is also closed at the intersection of Church Street leading to Nacogdoches Street.

•Nacogdoches Street remains closed to through traffic in front of the Reo Theatre, Las Margarita's, East Texas Awards and Engraving; however the other half block portion in front of Primp Salon leading to Nacogdoches and Austin Streets is open.
