Memorial Day flag raising conducted by Shelby County V.F.W. post

Annual ceremony shortened due to pandemic safety concerns

In spite of a light mist and overcast skies, members of Shelby County's V.F.W. Post 8904 and a small group of attendees gathered Monday to commemorate Memorial Day at the Veteran’s Memorial on the grounds of the 1885 Historic Courthouse in Center.

Unable to present the formal Memorial Day program this year due to COVID-19/coronavirus safety concerns, the local V.F.W. conducted the raising of flags from half-staff at noon as is customary for Memorial Day observance to honor those who died in the service of our country during a time of war.

`Post Quartermaster Larry Hume greeted those present with a brief recognition of Memorial Day.

V.F.W. members Newton Johnson and Travis Snider raised the flags following “Taps” played by bugler and V.F.W. Post Commander Gene Hutto.
