Doo Dah Parade, fajita lunch help kickoff 43rd East Texas Poultry Festival

Doo Dah Parade set for 4:30 p.m. Wednesday around downtown Center square

The kickoff events for the 43rd Annual East Texas Poultry Festival begin Wednesday leading up to days filled with festival activities.

The annual Poultry Festival Chicken Fajita Lunch, sponsored by East Texas Poultry Supply, is set for 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, on the Historic Downtown Center Square.

Chairman Bryan Wages said the lunch includes two chicken fajitas, chips, salsa and a drink for $7 per plate.

Doo Day Parade

Later next Wednesday, Sept. 25, will be the Doo Dah Parade with lineup for participants set for 4 p.m. Wednesday at the drive-through for Farmers State Bank.

Center Tire Company is the Platinum Sponsor for the Doo Dah Parade.The parade will circle the historic downtown square led by the Shelby County Junior Chamber of Commerce at 4:30.

Everyone is encouraged to either watch or participate in the parade.

"Ride your bike, bring your pet (on a leash), promote your business or organization — just show up ready to have fun," organizers said.

Queen's Court Coronation

On Saturday, Sept. 28, one of the highlights of the annual festival will be held with the coronation ceremony where the 2019 Poultry Festival Queen will be named.

Fourteen junior girls from area schools, and their escorts are participating in the activities this year.

The coronation will be held at 6 p.m. on Sept. 28th at Center High School Cafetorium. General admission will be $5. Tables and reserved seats may be purchased through the Chamber of Commerce at 598-3682.

Carnival, vendors and more

The Poultry Festival Carnival, a petting zoo, loads of live entertainment and cheerleading competition are all planned as part of the festival, Oct. 3-5, with most of the activities taking place on the downtown Center square around the Historic 1885 Shelby County Courthouse.

The carnival midway will be operated by Evans United Show and will feature a variety of rides, games and food.

Among entertainment will be a Chicken Clucking Contest with registration set for 5 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 5, followed by competition on the Main Stage at 5:30 p.m. The clucking contest is sponsored by Dr. Debrah J. Worsham, DDS.

It will include age group clucking for peeps, age 5 and under; chicks, ages 6-11; pullets, ages 12-16; and hens and roosters, age 17 and older with prizes awarded in each age group.

Photography Show

The 43rd Annual East Poultry Festival Open Photography Show will be held at the office of Dr. Charles R. Collard, O.D. located next to the RIO Theatre on the downtown Center Square, October 3, 4 and 5, from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

According to event Chairman and coordinator, Billie Jones, photography entries will be accepted at First United Methodist Church (basement), 211 Porter Street, Saturday, Sept. 21, from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.

Photography Show entry forms and rules may be picked up at the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce office located in the old jail inside the Historic Courthouse Square from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., Monday – Thursday and 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. on Friday or may be found at

Photography Show Categories include Fine Art, Scenic, Urban, People, Animals, Digital Manipulation, Flowers and Themed (specifically/primarily poultry). The age groups are Children 12 & under; Youth 13-18 and Adults 19 & over. The rule packets give additional information regarding the categories and classes.

Entry fees are $3 per entry. There will be a panel of judges choosing 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and Honorable Mention in each category, and Best of Show for adults, youth and children and People’s Choice Award.

Car, Motorcycle Show & Arts Show

The Shelby County Chamber of Commerce has begun registration for the Second Annual Poultry Festival Car and Motorcycle Show, arts and crafts vendors, and the Creative Arts Show for the 43rd Annual Poultry Festival, which will be held on the Center Square from Oct. 3-5. 

In the past, we’ve had a lot of entrants,” Chamber of Commerce President Deborah Chadwick said. “We send out press releases so early because we want people to start thinking about entering. It takes a lot of time to organize an event of this size, though applications aren’t due today. The due date is the end of September, but the earlier the entries, the more organized it will be.”

In the Car and Motorcycle Show, there will be three categories; Cars pre-1972, Cars 1972 and newer, and Motorcycles. The Car and Motorcycle Show is sponsored by Zack’s Tint Shop. Early registration through Sept. 27, is $20 for cars and $15 for motorcycles.

Quilt show

The Quilt Show will accept entries on Sept. 30, from 12:30- 2 p.m at the Courthouse and the quilts will be shown 10- 4 p.m, Oct. 3-5, during the Poultry Festival at the Courthouse. The show is sponsored by Scull Timber.

5K Chicken Trot

The annual 5K Chicken Trot will be held Saturday morning, Oct. 5, beginning and ending in downtown Center. The run is sponsored by 936 Crossfit.

The kids' run is scheduled to begin at 7 a.m., Oct. 5, while the 5K event is scheduled to kickoff at 7:30 a.m. Registration for the kids' run is $20 while the 5K registration is $30.

Pets are welcome on a leash and will  follow runners. Each registered participant will receive a button in the packet which allows for entrance into the Poultry Festival — October 3, 4 and 5. Packet pick-up will be on Wednesday, Oct. 2, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Chamber offices on the downtown square; and on Thursday, Oct. 3, from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. at Blush Boutique on the downtown square.

Rooster Breakfast will be available from 8 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. near the race start.  More information to come.

Organizers said a portion of the proceeds will assist the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce in providing discounted mammograms during the Health and Fitness Fair which will be held in March 2020.

Broiler Show

Judging for the annual Broiler Show will take place Saturday, Oct. 5, at Raymond Motors. The broiler auction will begin at 7 p.m. On the Main Stage at the Poultry Festival on the downtown Center Square.

The annual broiler show is sponsored by Shelby Savings Bank.
