Cooks were stirring the pots for a good cause - supporting church missions
The aroma coming from the pots of gumbo, soup and chili at Center First United Methodist Church on Sunday afternoon was enough to warm the taste buds of folks attending a cook-off at the church's fellowship hall.
The blends of “secret” spices and other flavorful ingredients was all part of the congregation's Missions Committee second annual Soup, Chili and Gumbo Cook-off. In addition to the winners taking home bragging rights, they also had a chance for prizes.
Soup, chili and gumbo first place winners received a plaque and handmade cutting boards. The Best Decorated Table Space winner received a plaque and a condiment bowl set and spoons.
It was all a fundraiser for the UMC Missions Committee, according to Becky Parait, cookoff coorindator.
Cookoff 2020 winners include:
• Soup Winner — Team Soup Siblings — Victoria Lee and Harrison Lee.
• Chili Winner — Team Not Wolf Brand Chili — Joe Bill Mettauer, Bill Holt and Steve Tinkle.
• Gumbo Winner — Ruby Everitt.
• Best Decorated Table Space — Team Not Wolf Brand Chili — Donna Holt.
In addition to the cook-off, a silent auction was also held with those proceeds also going to the missions committee.
The cooking competition was open to all ages, all local organizations and amateur cooks only.
