Center ISD Board could name new superintendent finalist this week

Item is up for consideration after closed executive session Thursday

A journey for the Center ISD Board of Trustees which began nearly five months ago could be coming to a culmination this week if a final decision is made on hiring a new superintendent.

The board began the process soon after former Center ISD Superintendent, Dr. James Hockenberry, submitted his resignation in early December, when he accepted a position with Longview ISD as an assistant superintendent.

Serving at the helm of the district on an interim basis has been Dr. Arnie Kelley who was retained in January.

Topping the agenda for a special board meeting at noon Thursday is the “Naming the lone finalist for Superintendent of Schools Position.” That item comes up on the agenda after a closed executive session where a discussion and consideration of naming the superintendent is the lone item listed on the agenda.

Texas state law requires a 21-day waiting period after a school board names a superintendent “Lone Finalist” before the future school superintendent can sign a contract. If the board names a finalist Thursday it will fall into a timeline established by Jim Largent of Largent Consulting, the firm retained by the district to lead the process of solicit applications, review them and work with the board on selecting candidates to interview.

In January, Largent said interviews should be conducted in March with his goal to have a lone finalist named by April 9 with a contract signed by the end of the month. Largent also said the preferred date for the new superintendent to start in Center is June 1.

Earlier in this Thursday's meeting Kelley is scheduled to provide an update on district operations during the prolonged COVID-19/coronavirus pandemic. Also listed for consideration in open session is consideration of suspending the district's grading policy and hear a recommendation from Shelly Norvell and Teresa Richard to adopt a revised grading policy.

Due to stipulations of limits on public gathering, Thursday's meeting will be conducted by video conference and will be available for public viewing at: https://youtu.be/pyCvvRMuW9E
