Construction work on a bridge on Shelby County Road 4356 has been completed and the roadway has been reopened to through traffic, according to Pct. 4 Shelby County Commissioner Tom Bellmyer.
Work on replacing the bridge about 1.6 miles west of U.S. 96 north of Center started earlier in January. The replaced structure will provide for safer passage for vehicles, especially heavier trucks such as propane trucks which can weigh as much as 34,000-36,000 pounds; UPS delivery trucks weighing 17,000 pounds and timber hauling trucks which can weigh as much as 80-000-to-90,000 pounds, Bellmyer said.
Bellmyer said the bridge has been inspected and had been approved for weight limits of up to 5,000 pounds per axle. The aging bridge was replaced with a steel support structure topped by wood decking.
